The way I write my songs is that I have to believe what I'm writing about, and that's why they always end up being so personal - because the kind of artists I like, they convince me, they totally win me over straight away in that thing. Like, 'Oh my God, this song is totally about me.'

I don't write songs about a specific, elusive thing. I write about love, and everyone knows what it is like to have your heart broken.

I write about heartbreak because I like writing about sad things, but I'm writing happy songs, too!

My inspiration comes from God, so I always have to be open, kind of like being an antenna. I like to write songs people love.

And so I write. I write my life. I write to escape real life. I write to live moments over again. I write to rewrite the moments I’ve lived over in a way that makes more sense to me. I write the moments to heal. I write the moments I hope never happen. And I write the moments I hope will happen.

I don't write particularly to effect social change. I believe writing can do that, but that's not why I write.
