There is a percentage of kids who don't go on to college for a variety of reasons. And the irony is that, often, those are the kids that are staying in the community and not going away.

We clearly don't want to send the message in this program that we don't want people to go to college or that this is a substitute for college.

If what we're doing seeds a young person so that person can establish his or her roots in the community, then we've had an amazing success.

It really was an epiphany that some of us had. Every year the Lions Club gives upward to six scholarships to kids who are going on to college.

The irony is that I was a single mother, and I raised five kids by myself and put myself through school. I bought my first house in 1999 -- that was a very big deal for me -- and now I have to sell it, only because they won't hire Americans. It's devastating.

For a lot of these guys, that light doesn't go on until they leave college. For some kids' cases, it's too late. For other kids' cases, it happens in the nick of time. As a coach, you have to able to adapt, trust these guys even though sometimes they don't trust you. I know it sounds crazy having said that, but I love my job.
