There is something particularly fascinating about seeing places you know in a piece of art - be that in a film, or a photograph, or a painting.

The financial value put on the job of the writer and the misconceptions around that make it extremely difficult to enter the profession.

What makes them so valuable is their familiarity with our system, ... a specialized location.

People were consuming on average less calories after the war than during the war. Things were still very tough. If you look at the film footage of London streets, even in areas which weren't slums, there are kids in the streets who are dirty and have no shoes on. It was rough. There was a real edge.

Painting, by its nature, cannot provide an object of simultaneous collective reception... as film is able to do today... And while efforts have been made to present paintings to the masses in galleries and salons, this mode of reception gives the masses no means of organizing and regulating their response. Thus, the same public which reacts progressively to a slapstick comedy inevitably displays a backward attitude toward Surrealism.
