This is a coup for commissioner Bud Selig. I'm surprised it's as good as it is.

It's a very difficult situation for Bud. I'm sympathetic to him, because it would be an investigation that somewhat would be directed at him.

I don't think Bud wants a major confrontation. On other hand he wants major changes, and that's going to lead to a major confrontation, ... The union is very well run. They win all the legal fights and baseball has to fold. There isn't much history that says the owners have a very good chance.

It's not perfect. But George Mitchell is credible. He should do a good job.

A good run in the Bud Shootout doesn't guarantee a good run in the Daytona 500, but it is a nice indicator that this part of the program is at least headed in the right direction. The extra seat time is always good to have, and I think there are things you can learn by participating in that race that the teams who aren't competing don't have the opportunity to learn.

Records set now have to have some sort of a cloud and might be tainted by what [the players] have been taking, if they've in fact been taking it. But we don't know what they're taking. We still need a lot more facts.
