This is a side of Austin that, I think, many people haven't seen before. One hundred thousand people in Travis County live in poverty. That's enough to fill the UT stadium.

Because non-payment of utilities is grounds for eviction, the threat of homelessness is a reality. This grant helps us provide client families with emergency assistance, but it also supports our longer-term programs that help clients learn skills for self-reliance.

PT needs me for food and shelter. I'm not sure, but I believe she recognizes me by touch. I can reach in the terrarium for her and she doesn't flinch. But, basically, PT likes her solitary life. People can't understand our bond, but they do when they sit and watch her. I find PT a calming animal. She's somewhat like my dogs here and at home; she's just built closer to the ground.

Food requests are way up. We sent out $1,500 in food purchase cards in January.
