To remain strong in the effect as the Self (Swaparinaam) such that, ‘This is an effect of the non-Self (parparinaam) and it is not My effect;’ that is known as penance (tapa).

What can be referred to as true internal penance? It is when the heart is actually burning within and One peacefully remains as the Knower-Seer of that.

The penance and renunciation that one is told to do is actually under the authority of the non-Self (parsatta). So how can that happen? Penance-renunciation, it is all a resultant effect of the non-Self (parparinaam). It is neither an effect of the Self (Swaparinaam) nor is it independent (swadhin).

The Lord used to See His own penance Himself! 

Women have an encircling wall of deceit around them; therefore, they are not aware of deception, it is their natural attribute. Men have the entanglement of egoism; egoism does not let them see that entanglement. After attaining the Knowledge of the Self, men have to keep ‘seeing’ the egoism and the women have to keep seeing the deceit.

Whatever you do in your worldly life, is all worldly vision. Until the line of demarcation (between the real and relative vision) is drawn, you have attained nothing.
