He continues to make prints until 1665. So he is simultaneously painting, drawing and making prints.

One of the things you'll notice about the sky is that he's taken a horizontal format: Holland is flat. The sky is rarely depicted other than as a foil to all of the detail in the foreground and his horizon line is often very low.

In his early work you won't see this kind of dramatic presentation. And what's interesting is the treatment of light and dark is actually a service to the subject. It brings it all together and emphasizes the subject.
