Vehicle burglary clearly was the category driving the overall property crime increase.

Our overall crime rate would have changed dramatically, if you take out those additional vehicle burglaries.

I was pleased that our violent crime rate was down a little, overall. Our domestic battery, aggravated battery and sexual assaults ... were generally down, but robbery was up fairly significantly.

Drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime. Underage drinking is the No. 1 youth drug problem, and MADD served more than 30,000 victims and survivors in 2004. It is time for everyone to realize that we need the support of the entire community to solve this problem and to save lives.

We're seeing evidence of Utah households responding to higher fuel costs by driving less, heating less, and being more efficient. And if oil prices stay high, we should also see more enduring efforts to explore alternatives, like tar sands and oil shale.
