We came down to see the steam cars and there were more than just steam cars, but old gasoline-powered cars and a replica of the Stanley Steamer that set the record 100 years ago.

We look forward to the day 20 years from now when hydrogen-powered cars are widely available. But we can't afford to sit back and wait for that day. We need to do something to address the problem immediately.

Why the spurt? Small cars powered by gas-sipping engines that start at $4,000.

Diesel intended his engine to compete with steam powered engines. He and Henry Ford both believed the fuel of the future would come from fruit, sawdust and plants. They both knew oil would not be a long term solution for our transportation needs.

Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles.

From the exterior, GM's newest cars are not that different from what they had before.
