A journalist is basically a chronicler, not an interpreter of events. Where else in society do you have the license to eavesdrop on so many different conversations as you have in journalism? Where else can you delve into the life of our times? I consider myself a fortunate man to have a forum for my curiosity.

I'll say one thing for television. It has taken children and educated them far beyond anything I was ever involved with as a child.

The printed page conveys information and commitment, and requires active involvement. Television conveys emotion and experience, and it's very limited in what it can do logically. It's an existential experience - there and then gone.

It's pathetic. I can't explain it. I don't want to sound like I'm ... moaning but there is massive indifference. It starts with the top at city hall and extends to the cultural institutions.
