What kept me out of trouble is going right to the edge and then... thinking that my mother would be embarrassed, and that I didn't want to embarrass her, and that my father would be embarrassed, and I just didn't want to do that to my family.

As I have discovered by examining my past, I started out as a child. Coincidentally, so did my brother. My mother did not put all her eggs in one basket, so to speak: she gave me a younger brother named Russell, who taught me what was meant by 'survival of the fittest.'

Athletics provided a life preserver for me, and that maybe kept me out of trouble. I never partied in high school. I mostly just dated.

When my mother and father fell in love, my mother's family would never accept it.

If I have something inside me that I want to get out, I'll just beat it out on the banjo right then and there.
