When I first retired, I just needed to keep active, so I started coaching riders. But then (Ride for Red founders) Joanne and Kevin (Gulliver) contacted me about coming here, and I started speaking a few times a year.

I started farming in 1948 and that was the first year I had my own crop. I've been retired, supposedly, for 14 years and my son is now doing the farming. Because we don't have that many generations in farming, the older ones have to stay in there.

The game has changed a lot. The game is faster than when I started coaching. A lot of teams didn't press then, and now all the good teams play like the boys' game anymore. But I still enjoy it.

We hung back and didn't wrestle aggressively. When we needed to score, we were hanging back.

Yes, the riders can get crippled and even killed. But that's just the way of the West. They ride for love -- not money. Well, that and for beer and to impress young girls. I guess some things never change.

About 95 percent of skateboarders worldwide are not vert riders. They don't have vert ramps around. It's easier to ride the streets.
