When we?d hear of an accident, she?d take me down to the coal mine and we?d watch them bring whoever out -- whether they were dead or alive.

The mines on television have all these pipes and tubes in them. They never had anything like that back then. I don?t think they?re anything like they used to be.

We have everything so handy today we never stop to think of where it comes from.

It just breaks my heart to think people have to earn a living like that.

I remember many times at the end of the day when the miners were all out, my dad would take me into the mine in one of the mining cars. He would take me way back in the mine and check to make sure everything was all right to let the miners go back in the next day.

When I saw that on television, it just broke my heart because I know what those miners go through.
