I think last year was probably his most healthy year since he's been in the organization. We think the injury bug is behind him.

I think from an offensive standpoint that's not the key component in our situation. They have to handle a pitching staff... and really call quality games and show all the defensive skills that we require.

Outside of that injury-plagued year in Colorado, he'd been completely healthy for the two years before that. So I think with some of the new rules you'll be seeing this year, he'll be right back where he was. People tend to think because he's been such a prominent name that he's 35 or 36 years old, but he's still a young guy with a lot left.

We want to have as many homegrown players as we can.

Hopefully what we've done is built a foundation where we'll be perennial contenders for the next 10 years.

That was something that I probably did wrong last year. I should have let the injury heal completely 100 percent. I just wanted to be there, and instead of helping the team, I was hurting the team. You learn from that.
