It takes decades for shrub communities to restore themselves. Grasses can sprout in a year or two.

We're just 14- and 15-year-old guys playing against juniors and seniors, and these guys are just stepping up. Most kids, not mine, but others I think would falter.

Morel mushrooms have an almost systematic pattern of growth. Once they sprout, they only fruit for 3 to 4 weeks in any one area, but the dedicated morel hunter can extend the collecting season by starting in the south and following the spring northward.
