There's no movie theatre here, no bowling alley, no YMCA. Everything is like an hour away, so we try to get as many of them involved in sports as we can so they're not off doing other things that can lead to trouble.

To do that, we've got to play the closer teams, but those are all 2A schools, borderline 3A schools. But those are the money games we have to play. We have to play Wade Hampton. We have to play Allendale (Fairfax). That's why our overall record is never going to be that good.

People put so much value in records, but see what happens with the kids. These boys are learning about being men.

We try not to have the kids go lacking.

I spent two years in the military service, then I trudged around in repertory for quite a while. I somehow wound up at the National Theatre, though, and then I was definitely on my way.
