We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

Personally, I think young musicians need to learn to play more than one style. Jazz can only enhance the classical side, and classical can only enhance the jazz. I started out playing classical, because you have to have that as a foundation.

I'm actually very hopeful because I think we're starting to play a style that fits us. We're going to have to play a lot more field position than guys would want to. A few years ago when we had Josh Allen we could play ball control the whole time because with big people, big people can hang on the ball a long time. Little people can't.

We like to take advantage of our up-tempo style. We like to play 94 feet of pressure defense.

It was actually my partner, Bernard Edwards, who helped me develop my sort of funky jazz style.

We call it swing jazz, ... Think Nat King Cole, Benny Goodman-style stuff. I grew up with those people around me. So it's natural that that is what I like doing.
